Beginning October 1, 2021, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will officially begin enforcing the REAL ID Act of 2005. This means that a traditional driver's license will no longer be accepted through airport security and all Americans will be required to present REAL ID-compliant identification to go through airport security and enter federal facilities.
WHAT MAKES A REAL ID REAL?
Real ID-compliant cards are generally marked with a STAR in the upper portion of the card. The style of the star will vary, depending on the state. It's best to check with your state's DMV directly to determine if your license is REAL ID compliant.

GET YOUR REAL ID EARLY
Unless you plan to start using your U.S. passport for ALL flights, the DMV is where you will go to get a REAL ID or enhanced driver's license (MI, MN, NY, VT and WA).
Lines could be long, so check with your state DMV in advance and gather the required documentation for when you arrive. There is no reason to wait. Plan early or you could be left behind.
